"Coconut Fred. He's awake, and he sounds dangerously friendly!"
―Wedgie, Master of Disaster
Lemon "Wedgie" Wedge[1] is a recurring character in "Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island!". He is a sourpuss sailor lemon who is shipwrecked on Fruit Salad Island and makes multiple attempts to escape but always fails, mostly indirectly caused by Coconut Fred.
He was voiced by Brian Drummond, who also voiced Dr. Bartlett, Larry Stempson, and Ripley Van Ripened.
Appearance[]
Wedgie is an anthropomorphic lemon with arms and legs. His face consists of black eyebrows with a long wrinkle line at the bottom covering a bit of his two eyes with orange pupils, and wrinkly lips with crooked teeth inside. He wears white sailor pants, black shoes, and a sailor hat on his head.
His prototype design draws him in a more simpler art style. The wrinkles on his face and his orange eyes remain, but he now has green eyebrows. His lips lack wrinkles and the color of his mouth is more warm colored; his teeth are still crooked but is now colored yellow. He lacks all clothing but his sailor hat. His feet also have one stub each, resembling a lemon's points.
Personality[]
He is a very bitter and stressed lemon. He doesn’t really interact with any of the other fruits on the island, mainly because he is more focused on leaving the island. He spends most of the time with the figure-head of his ship, Betty; talking to her about sailing away from the island.
He is prone to meltdowns/outbursts of anger when ever Coconut Fred, Slip and/or Slide annoy him. He claims to be always angry since his boat wrecked.
Official character biography[]
A sourpuss of a lemon, Wedgie is shipwrecked on Fruit Salad Island and still lives in his broken-down boat. This hermit’s only friend is Betty, the wooden masthead on his boat, and he’s constantly trying to get off the island and away from Coconut Fred.

Prior to the start of the series, Wedgie was sailing away from Blueberry Bay, but a freak storm began to happen. Wedgie was focusing on sailing during the storm, until a maddening gurgling noise Fred was making caused him to lose focus and crash into Fruit Salad Island.
In No News is Good News!, he gets hit in the head with Fred’s drumstick, breaking the floor in his ship in the process. He later gets caught in the water. Fred tries to save him, but he gets kicked back to land; as Fred juggles being both a lifeguard and a journalist. Wedgie later gets saved by Fred, who gives him CPR; spraying lemon juice into Mr. Greenrind’s eyes.
When Fred rings the gong that signals he's awake, Wedgie notices and says he's dangerously friendly. After this, Wedgie attempts to leave the island by wearing white bat wings and tells Betty that he'll fly away to another island, but gets thwarted by Fred by accidentally hitting him, knocking his bat wings and himself into the sea. Once Fred stops Melvin from erupting, Wedgie is seen fleeing the island on a raft to paddle away from the island, but a tower of hardened lava breaks his raft thus making his attempt unsuccessful. ("Master of Disaster")
After hearing Fred was doing magic, Wedgie walks up to him, presumably to ask him to magically get him off the island, but accidentally runs into an invisible tree that Fred casted a spell on to make invisible prior. Wedgie tries to leave but ends up continuously hitting the tree. Fred tries to make the tree visible again but accidentally turns Wedgie into a pig, a woman, and then a frog. After Fred undoes his wishes, Wedgie is turn back to normal and proceeds to hit the invisible tree again, before it became visible again. ("Hocus Pocus Lack of Focus")
While Mr. Greenrind and Fred are riding The Nutmare, Wedgie opens his boat's door to grab the newspaper and notices that someone placed rollercoaster tracks in his boat, so he asks Betty if she knew who did, but immediately gets hit by the ride in high speed and falls to the ground. ("Amuse-Otel")
Lemon Overboard! was his centric episode. Fred built a new sailing boat (yacht or ship), and asks Wedgie to help him become a sailor. Wedgie only agrees, so he could leave the island. They are accompanied by Bunga Berry, Slip and Slide. Wedgie is annoyed when he can’t sail in peace (with the passengers annoying him); and also by the sailor whistle Fred blows. He later explodes on Fred for tripping him. Slip or Slide ask Wedgie to tell them how he came to Fruit Salad Island. He told the 4 passengers how he crashed his boat; with Fred summoning all the details Wedgie put out. Fred indirectly causes the boat to break down. Fred and Wedgie try to sail through the storm; until Wedgie learns that Fred was the reason he can’t get off the island. The boat gets back, and Wedgie gets flung back to his original ship, defeated.
When at the Luau, Wedgie notices the new rules on the Squeaky Board where it says to 'Always run by the pool' and asks himself who would follow such a stupid rule, until he notices a group of islanders doing said rule. ("Fred Rules!")
Mr. Greenrind gets the fruitcups, and Fred decides to help him by curing it. One of the cures on Fred's list that was created by The Tiki was to 'suck on a lemon', Fred and the gang approach Wedgie and tells him about the plan which Wedgie is annoyed to hear, then Mr. Greenrind apologizes to Wedgie before putting him inside his mouth. Wedgie notices a crashed ship with a puppet heating itself on a fire and says hello in a questioning tone. Mr. Greenrind's fruitcups then launches Wedgie into his boat. Mr. Greenrind says they better be going and Fred and the gang then walk away slowly. ("A Bad Case of The Fruitcups")
Wedgie finally manages to get a boat that functions, and can finally get away from the Island with Betty. However, before Wedgie could get on, Mr. Greenrind lands on his boat and thanks Wedgie for the boat as he drives to the Golf Ball shelter. ("Bananas For Golf")
One of Wedgie's new plans are to use a diving suit to walk away from the island, but gets launched into the water by Fred before he can put on his shoes. At the end of the episode, the Biggest Fruit Pie in the Universe appears to make all the islanders apart of him. Fred or Captain Nut says they're gonna need backup and decides to give almost all of the side characters, along with Wedgie, a power ring. ("Captain Nut & the Power Fruits")
At the end of the episode, Wedgie appears as a spoof of Pauline in a bonus level Fred imagines after defeating Baron Butchy parodying the original Donkey Kong game. Wedgie asks where he is, and why is he wearing a dress. ("Sir Nutalot")
Wedgie and Betty can be seen at a restaurant and gets his ears hurt by Tiffany Pears's offkey singing. ("The Ripley Van Ripened Book of World Records")
Relationships[]
Coconut Fred[]
Wedgie hates Fred; due to him usually being the victim of Fred’s antics. Fred tries to compliment him, calling him a good sailor and such. Throughout the series, Fred (accidentally) causes Wedgie’s misery.
"Lemon Overboard" has them interact the most. Fred wants Wedgie to teach him how to be a sailor. He later builds the S.S. Coco-Wedgie, and Wedgie hesitantly joins him (in order to escape the island of course). Wedgie tries to keep Fred busy by telling him to study; but it doesn’t end well. Wedgie later blows up at Fred for tripping him. Later, when a storm apppears (indirectly from Fred), both him and Wedgie try and sail through the storm. Wedgie later realizes that Fred was the main reason he is stuck at the island and he snaps. Fred later thanks him for teaching him to be a sailor.
Betty[]
Betty is the main person/object that Wedgie talks to. Wedgie mainly talks to her about sailing away from the island, similar to Castaway.
Mr. Greenrind[]
Wedgie and Mr. Greenrind don't have any important interactions. Mr. G may interfere at times like driving away with Wedgie's motor boat or putting him in his mouth to get rid of his fruitcups.
Abilities[]
- Sailing: Wedgie is a sailor, so obviously he is pretty good at sailing.
Trivia[]
- Ripley Van Ripened and B.L. Tomato have been seen to be able to leave Fruit Salad Island whenever they want, while whenever Wedgie tries to leave he gets stopped.
- Wedgie is commonly perceived as being a main character despite not being one due to his popularity among the fans and critiques.
- Strangely enough, Wedgie is one of the characters featured on the Kids' WB! website for the show, and Bunga Berry is the only main character absent.
- Despite being called Lemon Wedge in the credits and the official bio, Wedgie is only called by his nickname in the show.
